Glimmer

This week, we’re focused on the powerful impact of  thoughts! Remember the movie Peter Pan? His happy thought helped him fly! Yours might not let you fly, but it can surely lift spirits and change the day’s direction!

It’s incredible how thoughts can instantly spark kindness, or dump us into frustration. We can shift perspectives with what I call a Glimmer. A Glimmer is the opposite of a negative trigger. Think of it as a joyous moment that brings comfort and reduces stress. The word Abracadabra means “I create as I speak!” A few kind words are MAGIC! There is real inner strength in choosing a happy thought and sharing one!

I’ve travel with happy face stickers. They’re a priceless tool when a child is upset on a flight. I’ll pass a sheet of 12 happy face stickers to the parent. This simple act puts the child on a new train of thought and is appreciated by all. So, how do we put a “Happy Face” on an adult? Just like the magic of those stickers, when we focus on a bird’s song, the scent of a favorite candle, or a quick snuggle with our fur baby, we experience real joy.

Tips from Toni: How to Spark a Glimmer

The key is, we don’t try to solve their problems—just offer a detour to ignite joy. The Butterfly Effect is my object lesson. I share colorful butterflies to show how one slight shift in the atmosphere can change a life. My goal is to give them the happy thought I have last, by giving them wings!

  1. The Sensory Shift: Ground them in the present by engaging their senses.
    • “Wow, the sky is so vibrant today!”
    • “Ah, this cool breeze feels wonderful!”
  2. The Mini-Narrative Detour: Share a fun, brief story or question. Curiosity is magnetic!
    • See a dog? Ask, “Do you have a furry friend? Mine goes wild for peanut butter!”
    • “That bright yellow reminds me of sunny days at the beach!”
  3. The Gentle Inquiry: Ask a question about positive plans to lighten their mood.  “What’s the first thing you’ll do when you get home?”

    The best moments in life are those that illuminate our hearts with sparks of joy. One of these moments was when my great-niece Maegen shared her first diary page with me. She had just begun to write, and I bought her a pink “Hello Kitty” diary. She came to me and opened it to a page with a big smile. She had written 5 simple words that began my commitment to build Human School. She wrote, “You are my favorite human.” At the time, I didn’t remember people using those words. Doug and I immediately adopted a love language of saying to each other, “You’re my favorite human.” What a worthy goal, to be someone’s favorite human. Today’s society is filled with disagreement, people taking sides, and competition. In Darwins, The Descent of Man, he explained the origin of what he called sympathy (which today would be termed empathy, altruism, or compassion) as an essential part of human nature. The current social climate moves us away from our human nature to be cooperative and compassionate. Human School is designed to encourage and inspire the BEST of your human nature. Each lesson contains practices to establish new positive routines for your day with exercises to establish best of your humanity as routine. Are you ready to make a commitment to your humanity?
