Friends
This week we are going to practice friendship. Is it possible that there are new friends nearby? It’s interesting what we can see when we look for it. The world is so full of disconnection to the humanity around them – This week your human school assignment is to intentionally connect and make a new friend through a simple introduction. I learned a great technique from my friend Anne Sadovsky. She called it the name exchange. You say, “My name is Toni, and you are?” rather than asking the question, “What’s your name?” This offers your name in exchange for theirs. Once they say their name, repeat it back to make sure you have correctly heard and then ask they how they spell it. There is often great stories in how people spell they name. It’s a great ice breaker.
Be sure to use their name with a positive statement back to them. Take a minute to share the Kindness Challenge QR and invite them to join you to make a positive ripple in the world. Challenge yourself to approach people who look down or sad. Don’t just grab those smiling, high energy who looks ready to ripple. This is about you stretching your social skills.
My go-to is usually to begin with body language. Smile, present myself confidently with a “do no harm” attitude. I like to use observational comments as a conversation starter about the present moment. It’s something we can both see and start a conversation over. This is about connecting so you will need to “be present” and intentional to make this work successfully. You’ve got one week. So take a look around, set your mindfulness on practicing friendship and see what happens when you connect with others.

About Human School
The best moments in life are those that illuminate our hearts with sparks of joy. One of these moments was when my great-niece Maegan shared her first diary page with me. She had just begun to write, and I bought her a pink “Hello Kitty” diary. She came to me and opened it to a page with a big smile. She had written 5 simple words that began my commitment to build Human School. She wrote, “You are my favorite human.” At the time, I didn’t remember people using those words. Doug and I immediately adopted a love language of saying to each other, “You’re my favorite human.” What a worthy goal, to be someone’s favorite human. Today’s society is filled with disagreement, people taking sides, and competition. In Darwins, The Descent of Man, he explained the origin of what he called sympathy (which today would be termed empathy, altruism, or compassion) as an essential part of human nature. The current social climate moves us away from our human nature to be cooperative and compassionate. Human School is designed to encourage and inspire the BEST of your human nature. Each lesson contains practices to establish new positive routines for your day with exercises to establish best of your humanity as routine. Are you ready to make a commitment to your humanity? This unique series on human school focuses on the practices of human kindness. When given the change to be right or be kind, let’s choose kindness. Take time to share this with your family, friends, co-workers, and customers. Our mission is to create decisive moments that transform the world around you. Thanks for joining me for Human School. Let’s practice daily kindness in our world!
