"Let Your Life Make a Ripple of Positive Change"
Write a Sugar Note
This week’s lesson in Human School is learning how to make homemade sugar with hand written words of encourage to those around you. Your assignment this week is to pass along the idea so the possibility of sugar could be added to your family and work relationships. You don’t need a jar to share a little sugar. Just tear off a piece of paper and take time to spread some sugar this holiday season to build a family culture of love! Download my custom sugar note template to be used over and over again.

When one of my dearest friends, Sanford, lost his father, a large group of us went to Houston to be with him. During the visit I saw a cute little “sugar jar” in a kitchen store. As I looked at it, I developed an idea. I thought that we could put “sweet thoughts” in the jar from all of us to continue to comfort Sanford after we left. I bought the jar and spread the word to my friends who quickly filled the jar with thoughtful notes of love, prayers and encouragement.
When we left his house, we placed the jar on his dresser as a surprise and then told him about it on the way to the airport. We told him to go to the sugar jar for a “sweet note” from one of us anytime he needed encouragement. We knew he would go home to an empty house, but now our thoughts and prayers were there for him every day in the sugar jar. He told us later that he went home and dumped out the entire jar on his bed and read them all, placing each one carefully back into the jar.
The second time I used the sugar jar idea was after Hurricane Katrina. I had people in my seminars write sugar notes for managers on the Gulf Coast. We sent sugar jars and Wal-Mart gift cards to help and encourage the teams devastated by the storm.
I believe deeply in the idea of affirming appreciation for the loved ones in our lives. How simple — a hand written note with a little sweet thought on it for someone in your life. The cost of this gesture is not money; it is time, thoughtfulness and love. I have shared my heart with my family many times on small pieces of paper throughout the years. Even though this sugar has no calories, and is good for you, it is quite rare and takes special effort to make. It builds strong hearts and minds!

About Human School
The best moments in life are those that illuminate our hearts with sparks of joy. One of these moments was when my great-niece Maegen shared her first diary page with me. She had just begun to write, and I bought her a pink “Hello Kitty” diary. She came to me and opened it to a page with a big smile. She had written 5 simple words that began my commitment to build Human School. She wrote, “You are my favorite human.” At the time, I didn’t remember people using those words. Doug and I immediately adopted a love language of saying to each other, “You’re my favorite human.” What a worthy goal, to be someone’s favorite human. Today’s society is filled with disagreement, people taking sides, and competition. In Darwins, The Descent of Man, he explained the origin of what he called sympathy (which today would be termed empathy, altruism, or compassion) as an essential part of human nature. The current social climate moves us away from our human nature to be cooperative and compassionate. Human School is designed to encourage and inspire the BEST of your human nature. Each lesson contains practices to establish new positive routines for your day with exercises to establish best of your humanity as routine. Are you ready to make a commitment to your humanity? This unique series on human school focuses on the practices of human kindness. When given the change to be right or be kind, let’s choose kindness. Take time to share this with your family, friends, co-workers, and customers. Our mission is to create decisive moments that transform the world around you. Thanks for joining me for Human School. Let’s practice daily kindness in our world!
